"I am extremely pleased that Judith Baskin has agreed to serve the College in this important post," said Scott Coltrane, Dean of Arts and Sciences. "As a humanities scholar -- like our new President Richard Lariviere -- Judith combines a deep understanding of ancient traditions with a practical appreciation for contemporary campus life."
Professor Baskin is an internationally renowned and prolific scholar, and the author or editor of six books and numerous articles, whose work is at the interface of history, medieval studies, religious studies and women's studies. In addition to her university service, she served from 2004-2006 as President of the Association for Jewish Studies, the 1,800-member professional organization of scholars of the Jewish experience.
Prior to her arrival at the University of Oregon, she was Chair of the Department of Judaic Studies at the University at Albany, State University of New York. In her 12-year tenure, she is credited with revitalizing the Judaic studies program at SUNY Albany. At Albany, she also served as Chair of the University Senate in 1997-98 and received awards for distinguished teaching and service.
