Yahoo's America's Top-Ten
Most Wired Colleges Honor Roll:
To put together their Top-Ten
Most Wired Honor Roll Yahoo surveyed universities, addressing thirty-five
factors broken out into four primary categories. In the assessment of a school's
wired-quotient, academics accounts for 45 percent of the total score, while
hardware and wiring and social use of the Internet categories comprises 22.5
percent each. Student services accounted for the remaining 10 percent. Ranking
is based on total scores determined from survey results; incomplete or missing
answers yielded no credit.
Academics
Some schools require new students to have mandatory Internet training as part
of their syllabus; a certain percentage of academic courses are likely to have
a Web page at any given time; some courses allow you to submit homework online,
too; others provide study questions or notes online.
Overall, extensive use of
the Internet in academics have helped to put the UO on the map, when it comes
to being wired. An overwhelming number of classes at the UO have home pages
(80 percent), and a large percentage require online homework and discussion
groups.
Hardware and Wiring
Some campus computers are student-owned, while others belong to the school.
The "port-to-pillow" ratio is the number of computer ports available per student;
best is 1:1. Default e-mail means that students automatically get an e-mail
account; in addition, some colleges automatically give students room for their
own Web page. At some schools, students don't have unlimited Web access; if
they stay online too long they'll pay. Online library catalog access allows
students to find out which books are available at the campus library.
UO received high marks in
the hardware and wiring. The "port-to-pillow" ratio here is 1:1, and students
are automatically allotted an e-mail account upon admission. The University
of Oregon provides unlimited Web access, and the library catalog is online.
Student Affairs
At some schools, students can register for classes online, as well as add and
drop classes on the Net; some places even allow students to get their official
grade reports online. Many institutions permit students and other interested
parties to see course syllabi and listings via the Net.
Virtually all student services
assessed by Yahoo are available online at the University of Oregon, including
grade reporting, transcript acquisition, and course syllabi.
Social Services
A certain percentage of students have Web pages on the school's system, as do
clubs and organizations. The school may or may not sponsor an online gaming,
chat, or dating service. Similarly, the school may keep an online list of events
on campus, or rides to destinations elsewhere.
UO received high marks for
providing access to social services on the 'Net. In part, the UO was assess
favorably because the UO webpage directs students to other sites of interest
and promotes familiarity with campus life. To visit the UO webpages, you can
