Wendy Larson, associate dean for the humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2002, became the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on July 1.
"Wendy is a great scholar who's well respected among the faculty," said outgoing dean Joe Stone. "It's the first time in nearly twenty years that a leader in the humanities has taken the helm of the College of Arts and Sciences."
A professor of East Asian languages and literature, Larson holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and earned her master’s and doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. Last year, she returned to the Bay area for a Stanford Humanities Center Fellowship to pursue her current research interest in the differences and interactions between Freudian theories of the mind and the modern Chinese revolutionary perspective.
Stone, after thirteen years of leadership of the college, returns to his role in the college as the W.E. Miner Chair in Economics. A nationally recognized labor economist, Stone has been at the University of Oregon since 1979.
"During Joe's tenure as dean, increased diversity in the arts and sciences, new programs focused on serving highly motivated students -- such as the Professional Distinctions Program and the Society for College Scholars -- and the hiring of exceptional new faculty have strengthened the liberal arts in Oregon," said Larson.
Linda Brady, senior vice president and provost, is conducting the search for a permanent dean for the college this academic year.
