The University of Oregon is a major research institution and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The AAU comprises sixty-two elite universities, which together produce some of the finest research in the world.
For all tenure-related faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, research is an indispensible part of their academic duties. In addition to striving for excellence in teaching, they are required to publish in the major scientific and scholarly outlets that disseminate new knowledge. To be hired or promoted at the University of Oregon, all tenure-related faculty members must be engaged in an active research program and make original contributions to their respective fields of knowledge. These standards are the same at all major research universities.
Research is conducted in the
Humanities,
Social Sciences and
Natural Sciences in a wide variety of ways. Many scholars work independently while others work collaboratively, sharing insight or expertise in a manner that expands our understanding of the subject matter.
Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences raised more than $80 million in external research support in 2008 from foundations, the federal government, the State of Oregon, industry, and other sources. In addition, many of our faculty are engaged in research projects for which little or no external funding is available. These activities, which are usually conducted by individuals or small groups and are crucial for fulfilling the intellectual mission of the university, are supported by various means through the departments within the College.
When research calls for systematic support, researchers often work together in research centers and institutes, many of which are organized under the auspices of the
Office of Research at the University of Oregon. The faculty who form the intellectual backbone of these centers and institutes are primarily faculty who are members of departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
