Culture and language are the greatest of human achievements. In our art
and song, our stories and ideals, we express our most profound
understanding of the world and our highest aspirations for our lives. The
works of mind and spirit are the "humanities." Originally, the
humanities dealt with the languages and literatures of classic Greece and
Rome. Today, we expand the spirit of that inquiry to the scope of human
cultures throughout history, and to the timeless heart of human nature.
Language remains at the core of the humanities-and all of education-for it
is through language that we express our ideas and beliefs.
