Graduate Community

The faculty and affiliated members of the Department of Classics strive to create an equitable and inclusive environment for all students with small classes and one on one mentorships. We explore the richness and diversity of the ancient Mediterranean world through multiple methods and approaches, curious and open-minded inquiry, and a desire to place cultures in dialogue with one another. We are committed to confronting and correcting our field’s historical inequities by welcoming and valuing students, scholars, and scholarship from non-traditional, underrepresented, and marginalized groups.

Eugene is close to the Pacific Ocean, several mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and Portland, the largest city in Oregon. In past years the department faculty and students have ventured outside of the classroom to find new learning experiences such as the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry Pompeii exhibit in Portland. We encourage applicants to tour the beautiful campus and to speak with current graduate students to get a feel for the work that is involved and the experiences that they have had at the University of Oregon.
