Funding and Research Support

MA in Language Teaching Studies Costs and Funding

Cost estimate for LTS 2023-2024:

Oregon Resident Graduate Student: $21,743.06 (includes all 4 terms)

Non-Oregon Resident Graduate Student: $36,347.06 (includes all 4 terms)

This tuition estimate is for the entire LTS 4-term intensive program (42 credits Fall-Spring, and 5 credits in Summer term), and is based on current Summer 2023 and 2023-24 academic year tuition information. Tuition is set by the University of Oregon and may change from year to year. The most direct way to calculate costs is on the Registrar's page.

Funding opportunities for LTS students:

Because the LTS program is short, intensive, and focuses on professional preparation, opportunities to be fully funded are competitive. However, some LTS students find Graduate Employment (GE) positions during the academic year. The Department of Linguistics has a limited number of GE positions that become available before and during the program and are offered to LTS students on a term-by-term basis. Some of our students have also been awarded positions with other departments. For example, between 2017 and 2024, 25-50% of our students received at least one term of GE funding (tuition remission, stipend, fee subsidy, and health insurance).

Please check the Division of Graduate Studies website for GE positions you may be qualified for (new ones become available weekly and are posted for at least 3 weeks).

Linguistics Department Graduate Employee position(s)

GE positions are limited and are typically reserved for PhD students, but they may become available in the Linguistics Department in some circumstances. If a position becomes available, LTS will contact qualified students about the opportunity to apply.

Scholarships

  • For Native students with tribal affiliations, there are scholarships such as the Future Stewards Award, which pays for tuition for up to six terms of study (2 academic years). Deadline is early September for the year of admission.
  • For domestic students from underrepresented backgrounds, there is the Diversity Scholarship, which pays a stipend that is renewable each year. Deadline is January.
  • For international students, some scholarships or financial aid options are also provided through the Office of International Affairs (OIA): https://isss.uoregon.edu/financial-support. One of these is the ICSP scholarships, which has a deadline of Feb. 19. Please not that these scholarships may have earlier deadlines than the LTS program deadline. Please contact Director Keli Yerian if you are applying for these OIA scholarships, as you should complete your application to LTS before the scholarship deadlines.
  • The Graduate School website shows other university financial aid opportunities, such as scholarships or work-study opportunities: https://graduatestudies.uoregon.edu/funding

PhD in Linguistics Program Support

Support within the Department

Students admitted to the PhD program in Linguistics are offered five years of support through the department. This support is in the form of a Graduate Employee (GE) appointment. In most cases, GEs provide instructional support for larger enrolling courses. A GE may also serve as instructor-of-record in lower division courses. Faculty who are Principal Investigators (PIs) on large grants may also engage a GE to work as a Research Assistant. These appointments are negotiated on an individual basis with the PI. GE appointments include a stipend, tuition waiver, partial fee waiver, and access to health care and other benefits.

Graduate Employment

The principles governing GE appointments at the UO can be found in the UO/GTFF Bargaining Agreement.

Support Outside the Department

We strongly encourage students to seek outside support for research and/or stipends, both to enable higher-quality research and to support extended time in the department. The Division of Graduate Studies has a funding library, informative web pages on financial support, and GEs open to students from across campus, and occasionally sponsors workshops relevant to funding issues.

For additional possible funding sources, consult the Division of Graduate Studies' funding pages.
