Haisu (pronounced “Hi Sue!”) is a PhD candidate of Environmental Sociology. She is currently conducting an ethnographic study on the disaster survivors' journeys back home after being displaced by the 2020 Holiday Farm Fire, one of the worst wildfire disasters in Oregon's history. Prior to that, Haisu researched another climate disaster related topic: the coal miners' perceptions of air pollution in China, which was published in Society & Natural Resources.

Haisu began her teaching career in 2004 in Mainland China where she taught English in three public universities in the city of Dalian. Since she joined the University of Oregon in 2018, she has taught numerous sociology courses as a teaching assistant, discussion section instructor and sole instructor. 

Graduated from the former "CityU MFA", an MFA program in Creative Writing at the City University of Hong Kong, she has published creative non-fiction essays and short stories in Hong Kong and the UK. Her recent essay on why she dropped her 18-year old English name is a part of the anthology Intimate Strangers: True Stories from Queer Asia. Haisu is a Dreamers Ally. Her pronouns are she/her.
