CAS Advisory Board

Advisory Board 

The CAS Advisory Board is comprised of members who believe strongly in the vital role that a liberal arts education plays in today’s world, educating future leaders, and benefiting the State of Oregon and its citizens. The vision for the Board is to bring together a group of supporters who will assist the Dean in developing and executing the College’s strategy and provide valuable external perspectives.

Linda Andrews
Linda Andrews
While at the UO, Linda, BA ‘74 (psychology), was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She is passionate about education and has served on the board of the Portland Art Museum. Linda and her husband Scott have two sons. “My degree has been helpful throughout my life with working, volunteering, 46 years of marriage, two sons and four grandchildren.” Linda joined the CAS advisory board in 2017.
Phil Asumndson
Phil Asmundson
Phil, BS ’81 (accounting), retired from Deloitte & Touche in 2014 where he was a Vice Chairman in charge of the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Industries. Phil and his wife Kim own Deep Sky Vineyard with vineyards in Arizona and Argentina. Phil joined the CAS Advisory Board in 2018.
Tucker Bounds
Tucker Bounds
Tucker, BA ‘02 (political science), is Director of Product Communications at Facebook. In this role, he manages communications for the company’s core content distribution products: News Feed, Stories and News. Tucker joined the CAS Advisory Board in 2013. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Alexia, their son, Stafford, and daughter, Madelaine.
Mike Couch
Mike Couch
During a 55-year real estate career, Mike, BS ’63 (political science), served as CEO of Sutter Hill Ltd., Bren Properties, M&T Properties, Couch Properties and currently, Couch Investments LLC. His extensive nonprofit board experience spans 85 years of service, including 14 organizations serving as Board Chair on 10 of them. Mike earned his MBA at Santa Clara University in 1969 and attended Stanford University’s GSB Program for Smaller Companies. Mike enjoys hiking, fly fishing, and public service.
Ashton Eaton
Ashton Eaton
Ashton, BA ’10 (psychology), is a 2x Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon and aspiring engineer. Born in Portland and raised in Central Oregon, he became a professional athlete after graduating from the UO. He retired from sport in 2017 and now works at Intel’s Olympic Technology Group while pursuing an engineering degree. “The foundation for my future was made at University of Oregon’s CAS. It’s an honor to be on the board and contribute back.”

Jeff Hansen
Jeff, BA ’91 (psychology), is a lifer at Microsoft, where in nearly 30 years with the company a consistent theme in his work has been creating change with lasting impact on how Microsoft plans and executes marketing globally. He enjoys investing time on the CAS Board of Advisors because he sees the impact of the hard work the Dean and his team have on this important pillar of the university – Jeff says he’s happy to make even a modest contribution to their success. Jeff and his wife Susie, BA ’92 (art history), live in Bellevue, WA.
William Herzog
Dr. William Herzog
William, BS ’70 (general science), MD ’73 (UO Dental School), practiced dentistry in Portland for over 40 years before moving on to teach for seven years at OHSU. After that he worked for two years with the Oregon Board of Dentistry. He enjoys golfing, aerobic exercise, and rooting for the Ducks men’s and women’s teams. “The most rewarding accomplishment I’ve experienced on the CAS Board was being a part of the organization that brought Tykeson Hall to the University and its students.”

Tom Janzen
Tom, BA ’79 (political science), is an attorney and partner with Schwartz & Janzen in Los Angeles and licensed to practice law in both California and Oregon. His firm represents the design professional, construction management, and contractor communities. He is a past member of the Gooden School Board of Directors and the Alverno Heights School Board of Trustees in Sierra Madre, California. Tom and his wife, Kari, have three children, one of whom is a Duck; the other two are attending Oregon State University.

Tom, PhD ’74 (chemistry), has had an extensive career in the pharmaceutical industry assisting early stage biotech companies with drug development and regulatory submissions to the FDA. His wife Lindsey also attended the UO. Tom and Lindsey have three sons, Chad (JD ’09), Tucker, and Brandon.

Michael, BS ’83 (political science), earned his JD at Lewis and Clark law school in 1988. He is an active alumnus at both institutions. Michael is married to Libby Keller who earned her BA from Stanford (’83 English) and received her JD from Lewis and Clark Law School in 1987. They are parents of three children who all have their master’s degrees from Clairmont McKenna, University of Texas and Columbia University, but no Ducks!
Betsy McClendon
Betsy McClendon (Advisory Board Chair)
Betsy, BA ’68 (mathematics), is the owner and designer of Designs by Betsy. She is a founding member of the San Diego Chapter of the International Interior Designer Association. Betsy serves as chairman emeritus of the Sharp Health Care Foundation, founder of Lead San Diego, and founder of La Jolla Community Church. Betsy and her husband, Scott, have one grown child, Philip, who resides in Kansas City with his wife and three adopted children.

Marianne, BA ’98 (English), is the President and Head of Design for McGuire Denim, which she founded in 2013. Marianne’s husband Coby, BA ’96 (political science) is McGuire’s CEO. The McDonalds have four young children and live in Los Angeles.

Natalie, BA ’80 (political science), is senior vice president for Wells Fargo Capital Finance, where she is responsible for risk management for the treasury management activities of Wells Fargo Capital Finance customers. Her more than 25 years at Wells Fargo include various wholesale banking areas. She serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Council of Capital Finance and is on the boards of Methodist Hospital of Southern California and Family Promise of the San Gabriel Valley. She enjoys traveling with her husband, Gary Hackney.

Doug BA ’86 (economics), is a senior vice president and partner at Burnham Benefits Insurance Services, a national benefits consulting firm based in Irvine, California, that is consistently awarded “Best Places to Work” both regionally and nationally. With more than 30 years in the field, he is responsible for providing health insurance and benefits consulting for mid to large employers throughout the US. Doug has two daughters, one of whom is a UO graduate, and one son.

George, BA ’76 (economics), was the founder and president of Western Title and Escrow Company. He was the past president and board member of Oregon Land Title Association. George also serves on the board of First Story, a nonprofit providing affordable housing. George lives in Bend with his wife, Conni. Their son, John, received his UO degree in physics and mathematics in 2013.

Stephanie, BA ’99 (political science), is principal of Daily Consulting, a political consulting company that oversees all finance and budget strategy for political campaigns. Daily Consulting represents more than 40 clients in California, and nationally, primarily focusing on west coast strategies for gubernatorial, US Senate, congressional, state senate, and assembly members. She is a mother of two and married to Justin Smith, BA ’98 (economics).
