Re-imagine the graduate student experience
GOAL01
Shorten time to degree and raise cohort completion rates.
Identify CAS graduate programs with long times to degree and other barriers to graduate student success. Collaborate with programs to develop five-year plans with specific recommendations and support for faculty-developed changes to program structure and student support and interventions, based on achievable metrics for each program. [ADGS, AYs 2024-2026]
- Identify equity gaps affecting first-generation and other underrepresented students and collaborate with units to address them. Provide guidance to make program policies, procedures, and expectations of students clearer and more transparent – minimizing barriers created by “hidden curricula.” [ADGS, AYs 2024-26]
To achieve this goal, we will:
All doctoral programs with average TTD above 6 years and all graduate programs with cohort completion rates under 60% have target goals and plans for improvement in process by Fall 2026.

GOAL02
Adopt best practices in graduate advising.
Provide written guidelines for advising and mentorship best practices to faculty and students. [ADGS and Division of Graduate Studies, Spring 2025]
Mandate the use of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and annual advisory meetings for all CAS graduate programs to ensure structured and continuous academic and professional growth. [ADGS, Spring 2025]
- Offer quarterly training sessions for graduate students on effective writing practices. Provide opportunities for protected writing time and peer support in graduate writing circles. [ADGS, Summer 2024]

GOAL03
Increase opportunities for graduate career and professional development across CAS and throughout their academic career.
Integrate broad-spectrum career development activities into degree programs beginning in students’ first terms, creating general modular content for programs to incorporate into curricula. Support departments and programs in developing and sharing professional and academic development courses, workshops, and events beyond the sponsoring unit. [ADGS, AYs 2024 - 2026]
Collaborate with department faculty and staff to improve tracking of graduate alumni and increasing mentorship of students by alumni. [ADGS, Winter-Fall 2025]
- Work with units to build more opportunities for internships and increase availability of academic credit for internships. Provide guidance on best practices for pre- and para-internship support for graduate students across CAS [ADGS, Spring 25-Spring 26].
To achieve this goal, we will:
40% of graduate programs incorporate modules by Fall 2026.
