Mission

The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to providing a rich liberal arts education in which all our students can cultivate the knowledge and skills to positively impact the world based on their own values and goals. We believe strongly that undergraduate student voices are critical to achieving this goal. The CAS Undergraduate Advisory Board (CAS USAB) brings together a group of undergraduate students to collaborate with college leadership by sharing their experience, insight, and act as liaisons to their peers in academic programs and affinity groups.

Membership

The CAS USAB is made up of approximately 12-18 undergraduate students majoring or minoring in a CAS program.  These roles will be filled by an application process.  The CAS USAB will be composed of a diverse group of students inclusive of the breadth of CAS divisions and schools, class standings, and identity groups.

Members of the board will be screened using a grading matrix agreed upon by the board but will ultimately be determined by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.

Board members will be asked to serve at least a two-year term (except for graduating students), with the option to renew for one or more additional terms at the discretion of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. The USAB members will receive a $250 stipend at the end of each year that they serve.

Purpose of the board

Members of the USAB agree individually and collectively:

  • To discuss issues related to improving student experience, both in general and with respect to students from particular underrepresented groups including, but not limited to, first generation college students, transfer students, students from minorities groups, LGBTQIA+ students, limited income students.
  • To consult with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and other college and university leaders on new and existing programs, initiatives, communications, and resources aimed at undergraduate students. Members may also propose agenda items to be discussed.
  • To serve as a conduit between CAS undergraduate students and the administration regarding the undergraduate student experience. Examples may include, but are not limited to, hosting forums, volunteering at events, sharing opportunities, etc

Advisory board member responsibilities

Members will:

  1. Attend the majority of the meetings each year at the University of Oregon campus and/or remotely as needed.
  2. Provide input to the Dean’s office on specific student programs, initiatives, and resources at the general meetings or later via email. Students are not responsible for the solutions to the issues presented.
  3. Consider taking on other responsibilities as requested by the Dean. (e.g., serving on a committee or ad hoc project team).
  4. Maintain confidentiality when presented with information that is sensitive or when invited to provide input on draft policies or proposed initiatives.
