COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS - When Fedi Aniefuna arrived at the University of Oregon, he still hadn’t decided whether he wanted to major in political science and go to law school, or study computer science and head straight into the workforce. Five years later, he’s beginning his second year as an engineer with Amazon Web Services after spending his time at the UO studying math and computer science.

SOCIOLOGY - In 2020, CAHOOTS became national model for de-escalation. Amid a budget crunch, on Thursday, April 10, researchers from the University of Oregon College of Arts and Sciences and Portland State University School of Social Work will share their findings on the impact of CAHOOTS on the Eugene-Springfield community.

The College of Arts and Sciences faculty are engaged in a multitude of research projects across our three divisions: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. Within our college’s more than 50 departments and programs, millions of dollars in grant funding are at work uncovering answers to some of the world’s most pressing questions. Here’s a look at the funded projects our researchers investigated in the 2023-2024 academic year.

COMPUTER SCIENCE - In a course where innovation meets real-world challenges, three computer science students took their classroom project beyond the grade book and put it into the hands of global travelers. Over the summer, computer science majors Adrian Heider, Raj Gill and Manu Shukla developed and launched a fully functional app: Constella, an iOS application aimed at reducing the cost of international phone plans.

Higher ed faces big challenges, but Tykeson Dean of Arts and Sciences Chris Poulsen is ready to meet them with a forward-thinking plan to establish CAS as a leader and innovator. Staff and faculty members came together for the inaugural College of Arts and Sciences Awards and Hallmark Achievement Reception, which celebrated some of the achievements of faculty and staff. In addition to celebrating some of the college’s faculty members who have received accolades outside of the university, the ceremony featured the college’s first-ever awards that recognize the work of faculty and staff.
