Dr. Rachel Elizabeth Weissler is a sociolinguist and Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Oregon, and an affiliate faculty member in Black Studies. Her research investigates how the accumulation of an individual's linguistic experiences shapes linguistic behavior, perception, and ideology formation, as assessed through neurophysiological methods (EEG), psycholinguistic survey approaches, and media analysis. A central strand of this work is raciolinguistic emotion perception, examining how listeners judge the race and emotion of speakers. Her work centers African American English, with particular attention to how mediated persona and stereotype accumulation shape racialized perceptions of speech. She directs the Raciolinguistics, Emotion Perception, Psycholinguistics, and Sociolinguistics (REPPS) Lab.
