My research concerns the neural and computational mechanisms through which perception becomes personally meaningful experience. I am interested in how perceptual structure interacts with prior beliefs about self and world to shape aesthetic experience and altered states of consciousness. I also study how psychedelics perturb neural systems, revealing principles of brain organization and the construction of the self. A central focus of my work is how art uses structural regularities to encode and transmit patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior across individuals and through time.
