Statement

Prof. Howell's research focuses on the built environment of the United States, with a particular interest in questions of urban planning and social stratification.  He is the author of Making the Mission: Planning and Ethnicity in San Francisco (University of Chicago Press, 2015). He has also published articles on the history of Fair Housing, as well as the history of youth culture.  Prof. Howell is currently developing a software package called "Mapping History" that enables scholars and other educators to create digital projects exploring the deep history of urban space.  His own digital projects focus on the history of planning in San Francisco and Portland.  He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2009.
