On June 20, College of Arts and Sciences students wrapped up the final day of spring — and years of college work — with commencement ceremonies. Starting in the morning and running until early evening, CAS graduates celebrated their achievements around campus, from Autzen Stadium to the grassy lawns of Global Scholars Hall.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, FOLKLORE, SOCIOLOGY, DATA SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS - Graduating students offer parting words and reflect on their time at the University of Oregon.

POLITICAL SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES - Amy Bowers Cordalis will speak at the University of Oregon's commencement on Tuesday, June 20. Cordalis is the co-principal of the Ridges to Riffles Indigenous Conservation Group, a nonprofit that represents Indigenous tribes, organizations and people in natural and cultural resource matters. She graduated from the UO in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in political science and minor in environmental studies.

By mid June, the smiling faces of nearly 60 UO faculty members will soon be flying on banners on campus and into town, highlighting outstanding teaching and scholarship. Each of the 59 banners will feature a portrait of a faculty member, a quote, and the reason the person is being featured, such as excellence in teaching, research, mentorship or leadership.

For the winter term, 4,556 University of Oregon students made the Dean' List. To qualify, a student must be an admitted undergraduate and complete at least 12 credits with a letter grade and with a grade-point average of at least 3.75.

NEUROSCIENCE, CHEMISTRY, GLOBAL HEALTH - Third-year Clark Honors College undergraduate student Nayantara Arora was recently awarded a $5,000 Key into Public Service Scholarship from Phi Beta Kappa.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the University of Oregon has several mental health resources for students, including anonymous mental health screening, peer connection services, group and individual short-term therapy — and more.

The University of Oregon is making significant strides towards becoming a designated Hispanic-serving institution with the release of a comprehensive report and the recent appointment of a special adviser — Laura Pulido, professor of indigenous, race and ethnic studies — to lead the initiative.

GLOBAL STUDIES, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES - Scholars from the two universities have spanned that global gap, most recently when six faculty members from KIU spent two months this winter at the UO with a shared goal of confronting climate change through research and enhancing teaching.

The Board of Trustees of the University of Oregon today named John Karl Scholz — a distinguished economist, professor, and current provost at University of Wisconsin-Madison — as the university’s 19th president. He will begin his appointment on July 1, 2023.

Founded in 1997, the Northwest Indigenous Language Institute (NILI) at the University of Oregon recently celebrated its 25th anniversary this past June. Now, thanks to a recent grant from The Roundhouse Foundation, NILI will be launching an initiative to analyze and re-envision needs for growing and expanding in the years ahead.

The University of Oregon is experiencing its biggest summer of study abroad enrollment in university history with 829 Ducks leaving the nest to study and intern in 34 countries on 78 different programs.

EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES & LITERATURES - Using language skills and cultural knowledge to tell stories that will make a difference are among the goals of a new program at the University of Oregon, which recently received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ten University of Oregon undergraduates had the chance to spend part of the summer honing their research skills through programs that offered a chance to pursue their own scholarly projects. The students were chosen for one of two types of research grants.
