NATIVE AMERICAN AND INDIGENOUS STUDIES - The Sapsik’ʷałá Program’s Grow Your Own (GYO) Future Teachers Program is a 12-week mentorship program for American Indian/Alaska Native high school and undergraduate students. The deadline is Feb. 9 for mentors and Feb. 16 for high school and college students.

Six CAS faculty members receive teaching awards

Six faculty members in CAS were among this year’s 2023 Distinguished Teaching Awards. They include Jocelyn Hollander, professor of sociology; Faith Barter, assistant professor in English; Alex Zunterstein, senior instructor in Spanish; Kirby Brown, associate professor of Native American literatures; Robin Hopkins, senior instructor of human physiology; and Tricia Rodley, senior instructor in theatre arts.

The Mother’s Day Powwow is back in full swing this year with traditional dances, ceremonies and a salmon bake. The 55th annual celebration is a designated Oregon Heritage Event and the oldest documented powwow in the state. The powwow, which runs May 12-14, is intended to honor and celebrate native educators, mothers and graduating seniors.
