Statement

Professor Eckerman received his PhD and MA in Classical Philology from UCLA and his BA in Classics and Economics from UC Davis. While a graduate student, he was Virginia Grace Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and a guest in the Philologisches Seminar in Tuebingen. He taught at UCLA for one year before coming to Eugene.

At the University of Oregon, he teaches a wide range of courses, including courses in Greek and Latin. He is a specialist on the epinician poetry of Pindar and Bacchylides, but his research regularly takes him to other authors and genres. More recently, he has developed a research interest in the epicurean poetry of Lucretius. He now regularly works on both Pindar and Lucretius. His research engages various theoretical models, such as cultural geographic theory and conceptual metaphor theory, and he is always interested in engaging theory as relevant to his current research projects.  He has written on Pindar, Bacchylides, Euripides, Archilochus, Vergil, Catullus, Lucretius, Greek epigraphy, Greek papyrology, and Greek iconography. He is happy to advise theses on Greek and Latin poetry and is particularly interested in overseeing work on Pindar and Lucretius.

He enjoys participating in SAIL Camp every summer in Eugene and is happy to talk about the Greeks and Romans in the local schools.
